Uplifting Local Designers of Pangasinan’s 4th District through an Inclusive and Accessible Design Workshop

  • Client

    Office of Rep. Christopher de Venecia 4th District of Pangasinan

  • Duration

    3-day online workshop

In line with Pangasinan’s tourism agenda, Representative Toff De Venecia wanted a logo that could represent Pangasinan’s Fourth District—a region spanning Dagupan, Manaog, Mangaldan, San Fabian, and San Jacinto. A logo design contest was held locally, with the winning logo set to become the face of their district and would appear on all official tourism materials. To encourage greater participation in the competition, Toff offered free online design workshops for the competition.

The participants of the logo mentorship program during the culminating session joined through Zoom.

We wanted to provide a workshop that would upskill and empower the participants taking into account each designer’s skill level and access to necessary tools and equipment.

Demographic –
Contestants were all local creatives who are currently practicing design either personally or professionally. Less than half of the finalists were using free software such as Canva, GIMP, Inkscape, and had limited to no access to personal computers and the internet.

Some of the finalists were only able to work on their entries while on the job as they were more able to access the tools necessary to create a digital work.

Skill Set–
The finalists range from beginner to advanced graphic design practitioners with basic to professional knowledge.

Participant Needs–
The participants needed to be grounded on foundational as well as technical skills to enable them to process and refine their entries further. They also needed guidance on how to work more practically, especially with limited resources.

The three-day online workshop was attended by 10 designers from District 4 of Pangasinan.

We divided the program into the following:

  • Focused lectures via Zoom;
  • Collaborative activity sessions on Miro;
  • Personalized feedback sessions.

Since the pandemic was still in full swing, we utilized online tools such as Miro and provided working spaces for each participant that they can work on synchronously and asynchronously.
