Continuing the conversation

We started 2020 with big plans of hosting a series of events and live talks to foster creative exchange within the Filipino design community. Given the circumstances, we found ourselves rethinking and pivoting to the digital space, where sharing and learning from one another was still possible, even just from our own homes.

Like most people coping with the quarantine, we looked to social media to keep connected and inspired. We launched Design Dialogues at Home Season 1 as an IGTV series on our And A Half Instagram page, where most of our followers are fellow designers and design enthusiasts alike.

We featured some of our good friends who are all different kinds of designers, specializing in different fields such as type design and phone photography. We were curious to know how other fellow creatives were transitioning to their work-from-home setup. What’s their creative process like? Has it changed? How do they stay inspired during this time?

The first season was our way of coping with the current situation, and hopefully a way to help other creatives connect as well. The process of video production and content creation was new to us, but we were determined to see the potential of Design Dialogues through.

Connecting creative communities

Season 1 was proof that people were eager to hear more from their fellow Filipino designers in a more intimate setting. We’re lucky to call some of the most talented designers in the industry our really good friends too, so this felt like an extension of how we usually show our love and support for them.

Season 2 was our chance to continue celebrating and supporting Filipino talent. We dedicated the season to Illustration in order to cater to our audience of design students and practitioners hungry for deeper design discussions. We were honored to feature some of our favorite illustrators and longtime idols to talk about their personal styles & stories behind their work.

Our move from IGTV to YouTube was another strategic step to growing the concept. This was our challenge to reach people beyond our usual social circles. We expanded the experience to cover viewing videos on YouTube and joining creative exercises on Instagram to engage with more people looking for that creative push.

We see Design Dialogues growing into a space where Filipino designers could share experiences, support their peers, and challenge one another creatively. Design Dialogues at Home is just our first venture into creating purposeful platforms for our growing design community.

How would you describe the success of Design Dialogues so far?

Kay: I think a lot of the success it’s experiencing now has a lot to do with the community. We targeted the right people but we also had a ton of help from our friends. That’s what makes this exciting. The people in this industry are willing and eager to be part of something big and meaningful.

Design Dialogues as an entity is still evolving and I hope it will be able to reach its goal of bringing people together to advocate design-thinking and deeper appreciation for design as a whole. We want to highlight the strength and value of the design community. We’re worth supporting and we can definitely be agents of change.
