In line with Pangasinan’s tourism agenda, Representative Toff De Venecia wanted a logo that could represent Pangasinan’s Fourth District—a region spanning Dagupan, Manaog, Mangaldan, San Fabian, and San Jacinto.

For him, the logo needed to come from the pool of creative talent within their district. This is why he held a logo design competition that was open to all residents of District 4, which happened from September to October 2021. The winning logo would become the face of their district and would appear on all official tourism materials.

To encourage greater participation in the competition, Toff offered free online design workshops for the competition finalists. When we were designing the program for the workshop, we kept in mind the primary goal of the project: To uplift local designers through a design education that was inclusive and accessible.

Making design terms accessible to all audiences

The three-day online workshop was attended by 10 designers from District 4. We divided the program into following:

  • Focused lectures via Zoom;
  • Collaborative activity sessions on Miro;
  • Personalized feedback sessions.

We took the time to explain industry standards and design concepts. Afterward, we explored the different frameworks and tools for creative ideation. And to tie everything up, we dove into the technicals such as file preparation and getting materials ready for production.

Honoring local talent and perspective

More than lectures, we also took into account the personal creative processes of each of the participants. After lessons, we’d give ample time for the designers to revise and design their submissions as they saw fit. But this was only possible in an environment that was free from judgment and could facilitate constructive feedback. So another important part of our workshop was that we would assign an And A Half mentor to a few participants to give personalized feedback for each of their submissions.

Community for community

After having workshopped their designs, the participants submitted their final works to the District 4 LGU. The works were uploaded online, asking the community to vote for the logo they felt best represented their community.
